A Little About Me…

WELCOME TO MISFITLAND

What’s Misfitland? Well, I’ve been struggling to wrap my brain around the concept for quite sometime.   Ever since a young age I always felt like I didn’t quite “FIT” in – whether it be with friends, school, art…you name it… I always felt like the strange Misfit who colored outside the lines and usually broke the rules even when I wasn’t purposely trying too.   I was well just different.  After a while I started to realize different didn’t have to equate bad.  It was just well different.

LEARN + CREATE + INSPIRE

As a child, I remember vividly in middle school having to write a biography on someone we admired.  I chose Walt Disney – mainly because of the animated films I have grown up watching.  Though I didn’t know much about the man who had actually created the beloved characters I had grown up.   As I dug deeper into his history, I realized he was a misfit too.   He saw things in ways that others didn’t.   One of my favorite quotes from him was as follows…

“We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

That was precisely what I wanted to do!  I wanted to continually be curious and push open doors that no one really thought to even try.  But more importantly, I wanted to inspire others the way Walt Disney, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, Dr. Seuss, and many other greats had inspired me. This is how the phrase LEARN CREATE INSPIRE came about.

MODERN WATERCOLORIST

So why am I telling you this lengthy story?  Well, because this is how I approach watercolor.  I’ve learned the basics of traditional watercolor but purposely veered from the traditional watercolor route.  I try new things in watercolor everyday -whether in my drawing or my painting. This is why I’m classified as a Modern Watercolorist – aka I use watercolor as my main medium of paint but like to add ink, gouache, acrylic, gold foil (yes I have used this), and anything else that pops in my mind.

So if you are looking for a traditional watercolor tutorial/teacher – I’m sadly going to disappoint.  But, if you are willing to try new things and open doors to who knows where.  Then get ready for a bit of whimsy and magic as we enter MisfitLand and tackle new creative worlds in the realm of watercolor.

Lots of Love,

Carrie Luc - Watercolor Misfit
