On October 1st, 2014 – the Watercolor Misfit website officially launched. Much has changed since then – and yet some has remained the same. What started as a small hobby on YouTube – has blossomed into a thriving business. And we aren’t through blooming yet. On the contrary – WE DREAM BIG!
Hopefully one day we can own a small brick and mortar workshop – where all of you can come paint with me – while we sip some warm cocoa or sweet coffee and relish a sweet pastry or cookie. I’ve always had a sweet tooth by the way. We’d also would love to have a place where ya’ll could purchase our whimsical illustrations in person. That is the dream – so follow along on our journey trying to make our dreams a reality.
BUT WHO IS WATERCOLOR MISFIT?
WELL, WE ARE A WIFE AND HUSBAND DUO!
My name is Carrie – I’m the founder, creative designer, and artist behind Watercolor Misfit. I love coffee, holiday decorating, walks at our local zoo, puppy dog cuddling, my awesome husband and of course crafting and creating. I was born in Florida – but moved to South Carolina around the age of 2. Although I love the Carolina’s – Florida will always have a special place in my heart – since that is where my grandparents lived and took me in for summers and Christmas holidays. That is also where my love for illustrating began – after my Papa took me to MGM studios and took me on the tour of the art studios. I could stay for hours there watching the illustrators hand draw every frame of an upcoming animation (yeah – this was before computer graphics). Since then – I’ve always wanted to craft stories with watercolor and put together movies of my tales. As a college student – I went to several schools – pursuing a special education degree – coupled with an art therapy minor. In 2009 – I graduated with a Masters in Elementary Education – and a couple of hours – just shy of an art minor. But that never bogged me down – because as a learning disability tutor for 8 + years – I used ever ounce of my art background and more – which grew eventually into this business.
My name is Stephen – I’m the other half of the founding team of Watercolor Misfit. I handle all the finances and logistics behind the business and enjoy staying behind the scenes. I love also love walks at our local zoo hanging out in the art studio with my wife and researching new online platforms and aids for business owners. I was born in South Carolina, and graduated from USC. Most days you can find me in my office tinkering and working behind the scenes in the online realm.
Well, the name kind of grew out of many negative life moments. Growing up I was often discouraged from pursuing art – because my style was considered “too childish” and not “realistic” enough. By college – I had pretty much given up on art – believe myself not good enough to pursue or even try anything int he creative realm. I thought of myself as a “Misfit” – someone who didn’t fit the mold of what a “true” artist was suppose to be. As I grew – I began to fall in love once again with drawing and painting and all things art! But I kept it hidden and away from prying eyes – afraid that someone else might take my passion and love for this thing called watercolor – again. But after some really hard health blows – and a deep dark period of depression – my husband encouraged me to share a bit of my talent to the world. And with heart pounding – I did. And yes – there has been still some negativity toward my passion – but I won’t ever let anyone rob me of the thing that brings my heart joy ever again.
Pablo Picas once said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” So won’t you come along we us – and remain children at play in this whimsical magical world of watercolor – wear animals have tea parties and talk about sweet honey pots and such.
